Study Finds Lower Back Pain is the Leading Cause of Disability Worldwide

Lower back pain seems to know no boundaries. The condition is known to affect people of all ages for a wide variety of reasons. The problems lower back pain can produce may occur due to age, aggressive movements or other conditions. Chances are you or a loved one has experienced the anguish and stress of lower back pain at one point in life. Now, new research has discovered that this nagging condition is the number one cause of disability around the world.

Painful Findings

A recent study published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases has found that out of 291 conditions studied, chronic lower back pain holds the top spot in years lost to disability and the sixth spot in disability-adjusted life years (DALY). Out of the 21 world regions studied, 12 of them saw lower back pain as the greatest contributor to disability.

The study also found that 1 in 10 people suffer from lower back pain and the number of DALYs rose from 58.2 million in 1990 to about 83 million in 2010. These shocking numbers are evidence that this condition is a serious burden to everyday life.
